Lymphedema is the build-up of fluid in soft body tissues when the lymph system is damaged or blocked. The lymph system is a network of lymph vessels, tissues, and organs that carry lymph throughout the body. Lymphedema occurs when lymph is not able to flow through the body the way that it should. The Lymphedema can’t be cured, but you can control the swelling and keep it from getting worse.

Lymphedema symptoms

  • Swelling in a part of the body such as:
    • Chest
    • Breast
    • Shoulder
    • Arm Leg
  • Skin feeling tight
  • Hardness of skin
  • Change of skins texture
  • Looking redness
  • Feeling hot
  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Discomfort in particular area

Lymphedema treatment

The recommended treatment for lymphoedema is decongestive lymphatic therapy (DLT).

DLT is not a cure for lymphoedema, but it can help control the symptoms. Although it takes time and effort, the treatment can be used to bring lymphoedema under control.

There are 4 components to DLT:

Compression bandages – to complement exercise by moving fluid out of the affected limb and minimize further build-up

Skin care – to keep the skin in good condition and reduce the chances of infection

Exercises – to use muscles in the affected limb to improve lymph drainage

Specialized massage techniques – known as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD); this stimulates the flow of fluid in the lymphatic system and reduces swelling.

DLT is an intensive phase of therapy, during which you may receive daily treatment for several weeks to help reduce the volume of the affected body part.

This is followed by a second phase called the maintenance phase. You’ll be encouraged to take over your care using simple self massage techniques, wearing compression garments, and continuing to exercise. This treatment phase aims to maintain the reduced size of the affected body part. You’ll have reviews every few months to check how your treatment is progressing.

Lymphedema clothing

The lymphatic system is different from blood circulation because it has no central pump like the heart to move fluid to the lymph glands. One of the ways to counterforce the muscles is with compression bandages or clothing, fitted over the affected areas. This stimulates a more effective lymph draining and when combined with exercise it can help to move the fluid from the affected limb.

Knowing where to buy lymphedema clothing can be a challenge in itself. If you are looking for a reliable lymphedema clothing retailer, Bras and Honey is an excellent choice. They stock a variety of compression garments specifically designed to assist with lymphedema therapy. With free delivery and no quibble returns it is definitely worth checking them out.
