Fort Myers Eye Doctor Tips For Maintaining Healthy Eyes

Your vision is a critical aspect of your life because it helps you collect information. Whenever you see something, your eyes will send data to your brain, and your brain will, then, interpret this data. Everything you’ve learned today is based on the things you’ve seen.

Your eyes are essential for your growth and development, which is why you should always exert time and effort in taking care of them. Regardless if you’re living in a busy city, such as Fort Myers, or a quaint neighborhood in other parts of the globe, taking care of your eyes should always be your top priority. Aside from making sure that you can visit your eye doctor regularly, you should also implement the following practices to keep your eyes healthy:

1. Eat The Right Food

One of the easiest ways to maintain healthy eyes is to pay more attention to the food you eat. This is important because the food you consume regularly, can significantly affect how your eyesight functions, as well as its susceptibility to common illnesses and diseases.

Adding the following food items to your diet is a great start for you to enjoy health eyes:

Kale: This leafy green vegetable is a great source of vitamin A that can protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful damage and reduce the risk of age-related eye changes.

Sweet Potatoes: These contain high levels of beta carotene that can protect your eyes from night blindness and dryness. Regular consumption of sweet potatoes can lessen your susceptibility to eye infections.

Strawberries: With their vitamin C content, strawberries can help lower your risk of cataracts. Eating strawberries regularly can also help maintain your eye health as you age, thanks to their ability to keep the blood vessels and connective tissues around your eyes healthy and free from inflammation.

Salmon: Salmon is a great source of vitamin D that works by protecting your eyes from macular degeneration. Salmon is packed with omega-3 fatty acids that can help maintain and improve your overall eye health as you age.

Green Tea: Aside from its relaxing effects, a cup of green tea can protect your eyes from cataracts, glaucoma, and other age-related macular degeneration.

2. Take Frequent Screen Breaks

Computers and other devices can make your life easier. With these innovations, you can accomplish different tasks at the same time without leaving your home. Although beneficial for your productivity, excessive use of computers and other digital screens can also take a toll on your eye health. Digital screens emit radiation that can cause eye strain and dry eyes.

To ensure that none of these happen, take frequent screen breaks when using any type of device. You should observe the 20-20-20 rule, which means that you should rest your eyes every 20 minutes by staring 20 feet away from your device for 20 seconds. This simple trick will allow you to enjoy any electronic devices without compromising your overall eye health.

3. Protect Your Eyes From Harmful Ultraviolet Rays

Basking in the sun outdoors can provide a lot of health benefits, but doing this too often can also pose serious risks to your eyes. Excessive exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can usually result in the gradual degeneration of your retina, overgrowth of the conjunctiva, and damage to the cornea.

Protect your eyes when spending time outdoors by wearing protective gear, such as sunglasses. You can also wear a cap or wide-brimmed hat when you go out. Wearing all of these will surely go a long way in protecting your eyes as you spend time under the sun.

4. Get Regular Eye Screenings

There are several ways you can take care of your eyes on your own, but you will always have limitations. Regardless of the myriad of resources you can find online and use to your advantage, there are things that only professionals can do, such as conducting eye screenings.

If you want to enjoy healthy eyes for the longest time possible, allocate time to visit an eye doctor in your city. They have the necessary background and equipment to properly check your eyes, diagnose any problems, and come up with tailored-fit solutions. In fact, paying for their service should always be part of your game plan in taking care of your eyes because they can detect serious health problems.

Be Consistent

This article will make it utterly easy for you to maintain healthy eyes. However, if you want to experience the best results, remember to be consistent with your efforts. You won’t be able to properly take care of your eyes if you’re only going to practice the tips in this article for a short period of time and, then, return to your unhealthy habits. Remember, consistency is key for you to enjoy good eyesight for years!
